Theodore and his new dad!

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve posted! Theodore has been with us for two and a half weeks, and I’m sure my readers can understand our lack of posts. That being said, I’ve wanted to recount the experience of bringing Theo into the world, from a dad’s point of view.

First things first — and I’m sure some of my friends can vouch for this — I’ve never considered myself the father type. People always told me I’ll make a great dad, and I always scoffed at the idea. Until I met Rebecca, the idea of having children ranked pretty high on the ‘no fucking way’ scale. Certainly lower than, I dunno, smoking meth, but way higher than skydiving. Once I met the right person, that changed pretty quickly. I just needed to find someone I could trust to help raise a child.

Dad is great

Dad is great

Why “Dad is great”

One of the all-time great stand up comedy routines is “Bill Cosby: Himself.”   There is not a dull moment in his sketch as he covers a variety of topics, including drugs, dentists, and children.

As a father of four children,  I especially enjoy the part about serving his children chocolate cake for breakfast, and while eating the cake, the happy children sing out, “Dad is great.  He gives us chocolate cake.”

I love this bit because I believe that it epitomizes the greatness of fatherhood, which is what I hope to celebrate with this blog.

Please don’t misunderstand.  My mother is great and I love the mother of my children with all my heart.  They have a skill set in caring, teaching, educating, and loving children in ways I was not blessed with and I’ll be forever grateful for these two women in my life.

But because many fathers seem to lack some of these skills and abilities, we march to a different beat.  We’re a bit unconventional, and sometimes it works.  And when it does, we gloat as if we’re wise Zen Masters.  And of course, sometimes being eccentric doesn’t work, which then results in endless ribbing from our kids.

Regardless of the good, bad, and ugly, I hope that the thoughts shared in this blog will help me and any others out there who are striving to be a better father.  And please feel free to share your stories.  I still have a lot to learn about parenting and look forward to hearing what others have to offer.

A letter to my son…

RC dear Son,

Avoiding Saccade

Healthy

FOCUS: I have mentioned to you before, the concept of self talk. I hope I have mentioned the concept of Healthy

Mind

Soul

Body

Healthy Body Mind and Soul, much as each of the three legs of a triangle together make a triangle: body, mind and soul make the person. The more a person exercises each component body, mind and soul the stronger (more capable) the person becomes.

RC I did not invent this concept. Healthy Body, Mind and Soul has been around at least since Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus et al but can be found in the Bible as well [http://www.openbible.info/topics/body_soul_and_spirit ] and is considered a best practice in 2014.

Self talk is a best method for each of us to keep ourselves focused on being the best version of ourselves that we can be.

Self-talk is one of the most powerful cognitive tools available. As Jim Afremow, an expert on the mental game in athletics and author of The Champion’s Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train and Thrive, explains, “thoughts determine feelings,” and “feelings influence performance.” Using self-talk effectively is an act of control. When a child takes control of her mental messages, she is on her way to redirecting her efforts and increasing her learning.

In the famous marshmallow test, researchers asked the children who resisted eating the marshmallow right away what they did to withstand the temptation. Several indicated that they talked to themselves. They told themselves messages like, “You can do this. Try to wait for one more minute,” and, “Make this fun. Imagine what else that thing could be besides a marshmallow.” What an example of using self-talk to distract oneself! “The mind guides action,” explains Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, a professor at the University of Thessaly who has studied self-talk and sports performance. “If we can succeed in regulating our thoughts, then this will help our behavior.”

Instructive self-talk, the act of “talking” through the details of how to do something successfully, is more effective than self-esteem boosting messages (e.g., “I’m the best!), in part because the brain has difficulty accepting a compliment that doesn’t have an associated accomplishment, but also because instructive self-talk increases the mindfulness with which a child approaches a challenge

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 10:28

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

James 2:26

For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Genesis 2:7

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

Galatians 5:16-17

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

Matthew 16:26

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

RC, Mom and I know you ARE gifted in so many ways, people around you at school, at church, in the community, Scouts, Dawgs Athletics, your extended families we all think so, and, I think you know so.

Waste not \ want not

Young Son, don’t waste your talents but exercise and build them and you will be at want less than others who fail to act – I believe you fully understand this sentence. Talk to yourself, be the best version of you that you can be. Success does require sweat;  that is just a part of life. Hard work trumps talent…

…when talent does not work hard.

Your mother will help, I will help, but we cannot be you and we cannot do your work for you.

If there is something you believe I should do differently – let’s talk, tell me what it is, if it is within reason I am sure I will do it.

We all love you, Mom, me, Grandma van Ee, Jess, Aunt Kelly, Steve, ‘Ber, even Brandon and Brooke and many, many people you would never imagine and we all want success and happiness for you no matter how it is that we say it…none of us though can do it for you…success and happiness are things you earn through your own thoughts and your own deeds…

Robert everyone struggles with saccade in the sensory world, especially in 2014 with so many auditory, visual, contextual stimulants, our brain creates an image from the various images processed by our visual system, it is a mind thing: focus is the answer .

…truth to tell Peanut as I conclude this, I think this is all stuff you already know.

I love you,

Dad

Friend of the Court Enemy of the Family – Carol Rhodes- DC Festival 08 – why families are and endangered species

I am sorry misandry does exist and as a matter of equal rights should be eliminated. Denigrating Fathers of course is not promotion of Fatherhood. As you will find herein, Fathers are critical to their children’s development.
Are we financing the destruction of families…would that have repercussions for our society?
