“A Prayer for Our Sons”

“A Prayer for Our Sons”

-Abraham

“Build me a son O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son who will put others above himself, and seek justice for the oppressed and broken hearted.  One who will confront and stand against evil in the darkest of places.  Give him the strength to withstand the storms of this world and turn to you daily for peace and serenity.

Build me a son O Lord who will seek your guidance, your wisdom, your power and most of all your Love, so he can reflect your beacon of light into this world.  Let him anchor down in your truth so he can hold his integrity and no one can question his moral judgment.  Teach him that honor and respect are a privilege and need to be earned.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.  Here let him learn to stand up in the storm, here let him learn compassion for those who fail.  Lord break his heart for what breaks yours so that he will know the true meaning of Love.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will embrace and welcome the future, but never forget the past.  Teach him Love and understanding so that he may show others the Love that comes from you is unconditional.

After all this, I pray you add a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, but not take himself too seriously.  Give him humility, so that he will always remember the grace you have shown.  Lastly I pray that you teach him that though a true spiritual leader has great power, with it comes great responsibility, perseverance, and humbleness.

Father I thank you for your blessings and the Love you have given me throughout my life.  You make all things new and turn everything bad into good.  I know not your ways, but I am thankful for the relationship we have and how  we continue to grow closer each day that passes.  I pray my son will have the opportunity to cry to you as I have and be embraced in your loving arms.

Amen.
